We are looking at the DESKA Machine Assistance System Controller MVP for use in one of our robotic systems.
Is it possible for us to install Ubuntu 18.04 on this computer instead of the Yocto Linux?
And does this device run on a standard Ubuntu kernel, or does it need a custom Kernel?
thank you for your inquiry.
Mainly we use the Yocto for performance and resource limitations on embedded hardware. We have tried other operating systems booted from USB stick. So I would expect a significant reduction in performance with Ubuntu 18.04. You would have to include drivers for the interfaces like Ethernet, USB, ....
Because it has not been extensively tested we can not guarantee full performance.
The Robotic software itself (using ROS kinetic kame) can be used on Ubuntu 18.
